8th Gen R18 to K Series Part 3

8th Gen R18 to K Series Part 3: Will some of the non-Si Civic parts work?

By Brian Gillespie and Aaron Gaghagen

Wouldn’t it be easier to just buy a Civic Si? Yes, but would it be better? Not necessarily. Sure you wouldn’t have to swap a stock Si to make it a K powered ride, but many FG2 and FA5 Civics have been put through the ringer at this point after going through multiple owners that may or may not have taken care of the vehicle. So, then you would end up fixing or swapping out parts anyway to get it to something reliable and fun after paying the “Si tax.” Why not have a larger pool of potential 8th gen Civics to choose from? Maybe you want the weight savings of no sunroof or no subwoofer? Also, depending on the engine and transmission one picks, a non-Si Civic could end up being faster for less money.

In this episode, we get down the nitty-gritty of the swap. What can we reuse from the original engine and what do we need to buy from a Civic Si. With a little trial and error, we look to find what we can recycle to keep costs down on this swap.

Will the stock radiator and fans work? Yes, they will. Will the radiator and heater hoses work? Some yes and some can be modified to work. What about the clutch master and slave? Master and some lines, yes. The slave, no. How about the R18 axles? How about maybe? We’ll get back to you on that.
