Axle, Top Hat, Rear Mount and Torque Mount Install: 8th Gen Civic refresh

By Aaron Gaghagen

Project DADMOBILE aka my daily driver has seen a lot of use. The 2007 FA5 Civic has been terrific to drive. I got the car with just 40,000 miles on it in 2011 for just a hair more than what I paid for the 2003 Civic that was traded in for it cost. That was most definitely money well spent. Besides being good looking and fun to drive, the 8th generation Civic has been reliable. I have driven it on countless road trips. I have driven it to the track, at the track and home again. It’s been the sleep machine for my firstborn child when nothing else would get them to sleep. It’s been everything I’ve needed it to be.

As great as the car has been, it’s due for some work. On a recent trip between Phoenix and San Diego a semi truck tire tread smacked DADMOBILE right in the face, exploding the Type R style front lip in an instant. I pulled over to make sure there wasn’t any damage to the radiator and when there wasn’t, I continued on my way home. At home I realized that on its way out the Type R style lip shredded the passenger side outer CV boot. Luckily I had another complete axle and I swapped it out the next day. Little did I know that the other axle suffered damage that would be revealed months later when the inside of my new Konig Hypergram was coated in grease.

Having to swap out the drivers side axle was actually a good thing since it would give us an opportunity to bring it into the shop to fix the noisy front top hats on the Progress CS2 Coilovers and add a Hasport Performance rear mount and upper torque mount. Doing these small things will help get the old Si ready to battle it out with Brian and Carter’s daily drivers in the Falken Tire Super Saloon Shootout. And I am going to need all the help I can get since DADMOBILE is the most stock out of the three Hondas.
