Today Honda dropped three Civic news stories. First, the North American debut of the new Civic hatchback prototype. It’s probably awesome to see in person, but we’ve already seen the pictures from Geneva. Hopefully the production version won’t stray too far from the aggressive lines. Second, they announced Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas will be headlining this years Honda Civic Tour. Cool, not our bag, but a big deal for pop music fans. Third and most importantly they debuted the Civic Red Bull Global Rallycross racecar and announced plans to campaign the new turbocharged 2016 Civic Coupe in the 2016 series partnering with Red Bull and championship-winning race team Olsbergs MSE.
Developed from a production-model 2016 Civic Coupe chassis by renowned builders and racers Olsbergs MSE (OMSE) with technical assistance from Honda Performance Development (HPD), the all-new Civic Red Bull GRC car is built to withstand the rigorous demands of racing in a series that emphasizes repeated aggressive acceleration and varied terrain. The car will boast more than 600 horsepower, turn in a 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds and is designed to handle the 70 foot table-top jumps featured on each racetrack.
Honda has tapped 2014 Global Rallycross Championship champion Joni Wiman and 2015 Global Rallycross Championship second place finisher Sebastian Eriksson to pilot Red Bull GRC Civic. With these experienced drivers, you know Honda means business about not only being competitive, but winning.
So, when will it be hitting the track? The 2016 Honda Global Rallycross Civic will make its racing debut in May on the 21st and 22nd at a double header event at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix, Arizona.
