Gambling on a Non-Running Car

Gambling on a Non-Running Car (Worth it or not?)- Project CRV

By Aaron Gaghagen and Brian Gillespie

Let’s face it, buying a used car is a gamble, a calculated risk. Sellers trying to make the most money off of their vehicle can sometimes over represent the vehicle’s strong points and downplay their faults. But that’s child’s play compared with the purchase of a non-running car. Since a non-running car can be an easy fix or a complete rebuild, the stakes are higher. A car that needs a bunch of work to just get to a basic state can quickly become more trouble than it’s worth.

That brings us to Brian’s latest purchase, a first generation CRV. If a Honda is relatively clean and the price is $500, then he doesn’t seem able to resist. This new-to-us CRV came with a broken timing belt. Does that mean it has bent valves? Well, let’s find out with some work from AD. A valve adjustment and timing belt with a new water pump could be just what this thing needs.
