What if I told you there’s a race where you can build a faster drag race car than your opponent and then you have to turn your keys and your vehicle title over to the owner of the car you just “beat” but lost to? Say what? Yes, there’s a race where you can have the faster car and you can still lose it. Oh, and it’s on television so the whole world can judge everything you do. That’s the beauty of a little phenomenon known as “Pinks.” The tagline was “Lose the race. Lose your ride.”

The show was peak motorsports-reality TV. It was real racers willing to put their cars up at the risk of losing them. People were supposed to bring vehicles that could run around a specific elapsed time, but since nobody wanted to lose racers frequently brought quicker cars than what was agreed to. Watching whoever spent the most money win another car would be boring. How did they fix that? Negotiations, baby! The reality TV part centered around the negotiations because the races were conditional. Racers could ask for anything like: no nitrous, lengths, getting the “hit” or other various things.

Brian, OF COURSE, was on this glorious show twice! But what happens on screen is only part of the story. Today we spill the tea.
