Today Honda dropped three Civic news stories. First, the North American debut of the new Civic hatchback prototype. It’s probably awesome to see in person, but we’ve already seen the pictures from Geneva. Hopefully the production version won’t stray too far from the aggressive lines. Second, they announced Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas will be headlining this years Honda Civic Tour. Cool, not our bag, but a big deal for pop music fans. Third and most importantly they debuted the Civic Red Bull Global Rallycross racecar and announced plans to campaign the new turbocharged 2016 Civic Coupe in the 2016 series partnering with Red Bull and championship-winning race team Olsbergs MSE.

Could this livery becoming to tracks and car shows next? It looks right at home on this aggressive racecar.

Developed from a production-model 2016 Civic Coupe chassis by renowned builders and racers Olsbergs MSE (OMSE) with technical assistance from Honda Performance Development (HPD), the all-new Civic Red Bull GRC car is built to withstand the rigorous demands of racing in a series that emphasizes repeated aggressive acceleration and varied terrain. The car will boast more than 600 horsepower, turn in a 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds and is designed to handle the 70 foot table-top jumps featured on each racetrack.

Sebastian Eriksson from Sweden and Joni Wiman from Finland will be the drivers behind this mean mug.

Honda has tapped 2014 Global Rallycross Championship champion Joni Wiman and 2015 Global Rallycross Championship second place finisher Sebastian Eriksson to pilot Red Bull GRC Civic. With these experienced drivers, you know Honda means business about not only being competitive, but winning.

Bulging fenders and side intakes give hints at what kind of performance the Red Bull GRC Honda Civic is built to do.

So, when will it be hitting the track? The 2016 Honda Global Rallycross Civic will make its racing debut in May on the 21st and 22nd at a double header event at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix, Arizona. Aaron Gaghagen is a veteran video editor and longtime Honda enthusiast. All told, he’s owned seven of them, and has enjoyed every single minute of wrenching on every single one. Except for that automatic one. That was probably a mistake. In 2010 Aaron teamed up with Brian Gillespie who along with another partner launched Nacho Speed Garage, a venture that capitalized on Aaron’s video expertise to do its part in entertaining and educating the Honda masses. Nacho Speed Garage took everything to the next level. Instead of reading magazines and cruising forums for content, Aaron and Brian were generating it themselves. The demise of Honda Tuning magazine in 2014 was the impetus for Aaron to do something even more impactful, though, which led to the creation of VTEC Academy and aims to carry that Honda torch forward in the same spirt of not just Honda Tuning but Nacho Speed Garage.
